Launch Instructor (Part-Time)

At Launch we believe in our students and their ability to learn and love math and math-based activities. As a Launch Instructor you will teach computer programming workshops and engage children in our mathematics curriculum.

Primary Requirements

Computer programming requirements: You are expected to be proficient in the MIT-developed Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu/). You will work with groups of students to teach them programming techniques while illustrating how math and logical thinking are critical to creating exciting programs.

Mathematics instruction requirements: You will tutor K-8 students using a combination of computer-based instruction and manipulative-based activities. Our methods stress math fluency, math concepts, and the application of mathematics in the real world. You will guide students as they build their math facts, instruct them as they learn new math principles, and inspire them with examples of real world math.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide top quality math tutoring utilizing the Launch methods
  • Teach students programming techniques using the Scratch language
  • Inspire students with a motivational spirit that is the core of the Launch culture
  • Interact with parents to provide feedback related to their children's progress
  • Maintain student records and document student results
  • Perform occasional administrative tasks

Candidate Requirements

  • Ability to create computer programs using the Scratch language and a solid knowledge of math concepts for grades pre-k through 8th
  • Solid ability and strong desire to present computer programming techniques and mathematical principles to students
  • Personable, friendly, focused, and communicative
  • Previous experience working with students as a tutor or in a similar capacity
  • Availability to work approximately 8 to 12 hours each week
  • Most important, the belief that every student can learn and love math

Additional Details

  • Part-time position (Available time slots: Mon-Fri 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Sat 9:00 am to 3:30 pm)
  • Center location: 173 West 81st Street, Lower Level (just off Amsterdam Ave.)
  • In-school teaching opportunities available around Manhattan (afterschool programs)
