Grades 5th To 7th
The Caesar shift, Alberti’s disk, Cherokee Code Talkers and the Enigma Machine…
As far back as 1900 BC Ciphers have been used to protect critical information. Our ability to encrypt and decrypt (“break”) these codes has changed the course of history. In this puzzling class Launch programmers use Python to disguise and reveal secret messages using famous ciphers. Students will learn various methods of hiding messages in Python using strings, lists, conditional statements, and custom functions. From shifting the alphabet so that A becomes B to numerical-based methods, unlock a new coding experience with Launch!
Previous experience coding with Scratch or similar highly recommended. Students must have a computer in order to code (not a Chromebook or tablet). It is recommended but not required that students use one computer to code and another device (tablet, computer) to participate in the Zoom class at the same time. Python class requires a free download of Python 3 found at: https://www.python.org/downloads/.
