Launch Science Workshops

Architecture & Engineering: Build It Up, Break It Down!

Ages: 6-8 (grades 1-3) and 9-12 (grades 4-7)
Ages 6-8 offered Spring 2014

Kids take their creations to the limit with Launch's Architecture & Engineering workshop. Students discover mathematical principles necessary to build structures capable of withstanding the forces of nature. From dams that stop powerful flooding waters to bridges that span the widest of gaps, our budding architects and engineers learn how proper designs lead to strong, safe structures. They put their own model-building skills to the ultimate test and then, as always at Launch, take their creations home for more fun!

Scratch Programming & Gaming

Ages: 8-13 (grades 3-8)
Offered Spring 2014

This course teaches the basics of computer programming using MIT’s Scratch system.  Students learn high-level problem solving strategies such as decomposing problems into small pieces, combining components into larger solutions, and troubleshooting.  Students find visible uses for mathematical concepts such as angles, Cartesian (X-Y) coordinates, variables, and formal logic.  Each student will make several games and/or animations that they can publish on MIT’s website for anyone to view and download!  No previous programming experience is required.

Python Programming, (L1 & L2)

INTRO TO PYTHON PROGRAMMING (L1)
Ages: 10-13 (grades 5-8)
Not available Spring 2014

In this workshop kids dive into text-based computer programming with the user-friendly Python language! Python is a challenging next step for budding programmers who have learned Scratch and are ready for more. Kids tackle techniques such as lists, if statements, loops and more. Additionally, through the learning experience kids refine their problem solving and logical reasoning skills. By the end of the workshop these programmers are able to build basic scripts such as text-based adventure games.

PYTHON PROGRAMMING & GAME CREATION (L2)
Ages: 10-13 (grades 5-8)
Offered Spring 2014

In this workshop kids continue their computer coding journey using the Python programming language! This class builds on material from Launch’s Intro to Python Programming (L1) workshop by incorporating a more advanced game creation element. Functions, classes and events are just a few of the concepts that kids learn as they develop their skills. By the end of the workshop students are able to add graphics to their text to create their own exciting games. Pre-requisite: Intro to Python Programming (L1).

App Inventor For Android

Ages: 10-13 (grades 5-8)
Offered Spring 2014

Kids create their very own, original Android apps for use on mobile and tablet devices with MIT’s user-friendly App Inventor system! With an interface similar to Scratch, kids learn how to design a GUI (graphical user interface), where to place buttons and text, and how to strategically use multiple screens. Conditional statements and Boolean operators are critical programming elements learned during the class. Kids may bring their own Android device or borrow one from Launch.

Actions & Reactions: Fun With Science!

Ages: 6-8 (grades 1-3) and 9-12 (grades 4-7)
Not available Spring 2014

Kids find out what makes the world tick in Launch's exciting workshop focusing on physics and chemistry. Actions & Reactions combines classic and innovative science experiments with an emphasis on understanding the math behind the hands-on fun. From high-flying catapult projectiles to dramatic chemical reactions, students will be sure to see math and science in a new exciting way! And as always at Launch, children's creations are theirs to keep!

3-2-1 Blast Off! Rocket Science

Ages: 6-8 (grades 1-3) and 9-12 (grades 4-7)
Not available Spring 2014

From paper airplanes to air-powered rockets, from balsa wood gliders to remote control helicopters, kids explore the mechanical how’s and why’s of aerospace engineering in a fun, hands-on way. It all starts with the four forces of flight (thrust, drag, lift, and gravity) and ends with a solid understanding of airborne vehicles.  Children build flying models that they get to keep, generating a 747-sized buzz with friends who share common interests!

Rockin' Robotics & Electronics

Ages: 6-8 (grades 1-3) and 9-12 (grades 4-7)
Not available Spring 2014

Not only do kids learn about building robots and electronics, but they also make their very own projects to take home!  Children may build remote controlled mars rover robots, wire simple circuits to create burglar alarms, or use corrugated boxes and plastic cups to design crafty Garbage-Bots.  Each day of the course brings a new surprise project with interesting scientific facts that they will retain for years (didn’t you always want to learn how the sun powers a solar race car?).  But most important, each child will feel accomplished in bringing their own creations home with them!

Wheels & Water: Vehicles in Motion!

Ages: 6-8 (grades 1-3) and 9-12 (grades 4-7)
Not available Spring 2014

Feed your need for speed with the Launch ground transportation program! Kids explore the math and science that governs how trains, cars and boats move - then put their model-building skills in motion. From sailing ships to maglev trains, Launch takes transport to a new level.  And of course, all Launch children race home with their models in-hand!
